Set up: Penelope has been told to fix lunch and one of the items Charles has requested bread. He gave her no other instructions to see just how she would handle it.

There’s a cook book on the shelf. If you don’t know how to make bread, get inside and learn.”
She had an idea but never actually baked any, so she found the book and read the recipe. Then, discovered she had a real problem.
Is this a set up? Am I supposed to fail, so he could discipline me again? He does not have all the necessary ingredients and I can not ask him without breaking a rule. He is just outside chopping wood, if I stand in the door way maybe he’ll see I need something.
Twenty minute she stood there, and she knew he saw her, however he ignored her. Panic edged up her spine. Going back inside while leaning against the bed post, she saw it. She started to laugh to the point of becoming hysterical. There as pretty as you please sat a large sack of cornmeal. She had eggs, canned milk, sugar, salt, and right next to the cornmeal was an unopened can of baking powder.
Here Penelope's recipe for cornbread:

1-1/2 cup corn meal
    1/2 cup all-purpose flour
    1/4 cup sugar
    1 tablespoon baking powder
    1 teaspoon salt
    1 cup milk
1/3cup melted lard or today vegetable oil
    1 egg
Bake in hot oven 20-30 minutes
Back to our story:
Following the directions a pan was in the oven in no time flat. She set two places at the table. Sliced more of the cured meat and had a can of peas ready to open if he wanted more. Then the hard part she sat and waited.
The chopping sounds stopped. The silence was deafening, and the shadow filling the door was frightening. Her heart was pounding, he carried up some fresh butter from the spring house crossed the room placed it on the table. He turned and took a step toward her, she took a step backward and when she saw the gleam in his eye in recognition of her action she quickly corrected and took two steps toward him. He smiled.
He swept her into his arms and kissed her, she did not disappoint him.
Well was Charles satisfied with her solution? Did he like her cornbread? Got to buy the book to find out. :)
